Anonymous asked: Can you share some basic tips on drawing animals? Such as where to start? I always have trouble with that because there are so many animals. Thank you! :)

I’m still learning how to draw animals myself but sure, I’ll try to help!

A trick I like to employ right before drawing people and things is to generalize them into the most quintessential shapes, lines, and forms as they can be-this extends to animals, too. Some animals are easier to translate into shapes than others-for example, most birds are just circles and ovals while quadrupedal animals are usually more complex-in which case I’d compartmentalize into separate body parts (ie face, chest, torso, legs) to “convert” into shapes. Once you’ve gotten the desired form of the animal down, feel free to embellish! I love to play around with exaggerate an animal’s defining features.

Another important thing to remember when drawing animals is to pay attention where most of its mass is centered-some animals are especially hefty in the front regions, while others have mass focused in the hind areas. It goes without saying that looking at reference photos or even other artist’s animal drawings and caricatures will be an invaluable aid to your drawing endeavors!
